Twenty Years of Hubble

Damn. Two Decades of Awesome.

That tinkering sound you hear...

is Jimmy celebrating "Spring Cleaning 2010" by messing around with some of the pages on our site.  While things look and work as expected in the 10 or so browsers on which I've checked, there's always some oddball combination of "stuff" out there that will break something.  If you spot anything heinous or just have a suggestion or comment, please let me know.

Haiti.

By all means help where and how you can in the Haiti effort, but make sure you efforts aren't for naught by first checking the Charity Navigator.

Jimmy haz a Facebook!

Yeah, I know.  It took me long enough, eh?  Well, about a week ago (July 7th or so) I finally got my act together and set up another account.  Yes, I actually have two (and possibly three) accounts on there, but at some point in the process of setting up things the first time around I managed to get myself into a "Recursive Inaccessibility Loop" (try to imagine an "Infinite Improbability Drive of Stupidity" and you'll understand what I did to myself).  Therefore, until I unscrew myself from that original Facebook Fiasco you may, if you so desire, send a "friend request" to me by clicking on this here linky.

And, by the way, if you're deeply invested in the whole Twitter / Facebook / RSS / Flickr / YouTube / etc. social networking timesuck of the moment, try the Flock browser.  Its foundation is Mozilla (Firefox) and is Mac/Win and sometimes Lin.  It's pretty cool.

Truly one of my Top Ten faves for as far back as I can remember.

ComFest!

It's ComFest weekend.  Up next: DooDah!

__________________________________________________________________ (top)

It's PRIDE weekend, y'all.

And it's square in the middle of the Short North. Here's the info for the events, parade, and parking.  No matter your personal orientation it's an absolute blast - and a great warmup to next week's bash: Comfest!  No, we don't party all the time around here - but this part of the Summer is rather hectic.

Every time you think you've seen it all

someone comes by and re-invents the artistic wheel.  This time, it's in the form of "shadow art from junk".

Screw the "Fifth" Element

This here be the 112th Element.

By the way, The Fifth Element remains one of my all time favorite movies - no matter which release version I watch (and I think I've four of them just in SD format).

Wow.

Just. Watch. This.  Be sure to scroll down and read the article on creating this work of art.  A work, by the way, commissioned for an elevator.

Sharpie art?

The headline says "Man decorates basement with $10 worth of Sharpie." The video is very cool.

noun:

a phenomenon that naturally accompanies or follows something : some of us look on pain and illness as concomitants of the stresses of living.

Quite the ad man back in the day... "the day" being 1957...

Here's what Wikipedia has to say about it.  Personally, I'm holding out for the 5th of Bacon September.

White Flags of Winter Chimneys

If you remember Prince and the Revolution, you should remember Wendy & Lisa.  Well guess what? W&L have a brand new record - and I can even call it an album since, in addition to the CDDA and various download options, it's also being released on VINYL!

Cool - just noticed their soundtrack to the TV show "HEROS" is now available.

Saturday, 2 May 2009 - Kentucky Derby

In case you missed it, it's over.  Hopefully I'm not being a spoiler, but it was a pony that originally cost $9,500 and ran at 50:1 odds - and apparently towed to the track in a beater trailer hitched to a pickup truck.  Oh yeah - somebody's gettin' paid today.

Update

And for at least one day, Aretha Franklin's Inauguration Hat  doesn't seem so flipping crazy.

NAB 2009

Another NAB show is in the books. Beautiful weather (cloudless skies and in the lower 90s) and I once again avoided a visit to the Clark Co. jail. But attendance at the LVCC looked to be about half of what it was a couple of years ago. For reference that would be a little over 100,000 in 2007, and what felt like around 50,000 this year (NAB says over 80,000 folks registered for the event).

Now one might think that this is a Bad Thing, and I'm sure more than a few exhibitors felt this way. But on the positive side, it meant easy access to all the booths and displays and demos and engineers and techies and salesbots and especially the SWAG!

Ok - I looked it up. "SWAG" is the common spelling for the freebies and handouts one gets at these types of shows. "SCHWAG" is more commonly used to reference low-grade marijuana. So there.

Anyway - as soon as I get time I'll update with some observations. Check back next week.
